With 5 calendar years to serve in a Mississippi Women’s Prison, I went to my first love for comfort. I bought a composition notebook off the canteen and I wrote. “Penitentiary Changes” came about as a letter that I wrote to myself as if I was still in the “free world.” I said “you say you never been you better stay away, it’s gonna be hard doing 5 years day for day.” But I did it, I made it and it made me.
